Ohrid Lake - Macedonia - Travel Guide and Travel Info

Lake Ohrid is one of Europe’s deepest and oldest lakes situated in the southern region of Macedonia, on the border between Macedonia and the Republic of Albania. It is preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem with more than 200 endemic species that is of worldwide importance. This is perhaps why it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979 Lake Ohrid is about 30 kilometers long and round 288 meters deep. With its astonishingly clean and clear waters, plus the picturesque surrounding mountain, the lake is a famous tourist attraction.


The lake is very accessible to visitors with then Ohrid international airport located just 7 km from city center and serves as the main link for Ohrid with Belgrade, Ljubljana, Zurich, Dusseldorf, Tel-Aviv, Vienna, and Amsterdam among other world major cities. There is a regular Bus Service from Skopje and Bitola for visitors who would love to enjoy the beautiful countryside. Alternatively visitors could use rental cars or taxis from Skopje. 


Accommodation around the lake is fairly affordable and can easily be accessed. The available options include prestigious hotels, lovely villas apartment and private homes accommodation. There also elegant restaurants, cafes and other forms of eateries where you can grab a quick bite.


Visiting Europe’s deepest lake is such an unforgettable experience as there is a lot to see and do. There are several fishing villages around the lake. Visiting the villages offer a visitor the glimpse into the lives of the people of Ohrid as you sample the different indigenous flavours of fish caught from the lake. You could also enjoy a boat ride and combine it sport fishing in the after noon. Taking pictures on the lake is also a popular tourist activity because the surrounding beautiful mountains.


For bird watches, a visit to the lake is no late down as there are many water bird species that venture fearlessly into the lake in search for the delicious fish and other aquatic creatures. With over 200 species, the lake attracts not just birds but also various forms of reptiles and hence an important attraction to lovers of animals.


A hike around the lake and far fields is also a very enjoyable affair. The panoramic views of the lake, the cities across the lake and the surrounding picturesque mountains offer such a great photo shooting opportunities to visitors. There is also a chance to see very rear reptiles and spot some exotic birds. You could also visit important cultural features such as shrines, old churches and learn more about the people of the area.


Lake Ohrid is surrounded by three cities namely: Ohrid City, Struga City and Pogradec City. Ohrid City alongside the lake is also a tourist destination of Macedonia. It is a lively city that also remains sparkling throughout the night when seen from the lakeside. It has many historic sites worth to visit and explore the cohesive history of Macedonia.


You could also cross over and venture into Albania and especially the city of Pogradec. Here, you have a chance to enjoy the Albanian dishes, night life and panoramic views of the lake from that side.
