Marrakech (Marrakesh) is an imperial city in Morocco. The name Marrakech is literally translated to mean land of God. The city is listed at number three among the largest cities in Morocco after Rabat and Casablanca. Marrakech is located on a strategic location at the foot of Atlas Mountain and Sahara Desert thereby making it one of the most enviable tourist destinations in Morocco. Technically, the city is divided between the historical city and modern city which houses reputed fast food chains, renowned brand stores and modern restaurants. There is an international Airport in Marrakech with direct flight connections to Stockholm, Copenhagen, Madrid, Paris and London. Once you are in the city, most of the important attractions can be toured on foot but you have to be ready to walk for long distances. You can as well explore the city using petits axis and buses which are available in plentiful.
Marrakech has many tourist attractions and many things to do as well. There are several interesting museums and good architectural and historical sites that w ill obviously keep you busy. The Djemaa El- Fna markets the highlight of nightlife in Marrakech and is packed with story tellers, dancers and musicians. You will always hear the excited shouts of happy crowds and drum beat. It is a great place to enjoy a good local show and have some henna tattoos as well. The souks are Marrakech markets where you can find almost anything you need ranging from shoes to spices and tea pots, kaftans and tanginess among other many items. However, as usual, foreign tourists should always be prepared to pay more.
A visit to the Tanneries will give you one of the most interesting experiences where you can take pictures with the locals. The Koutoubia mosque is Morocco’s Eiffel Tower. While foreign visitors are not allowed to enter the mosque, you can always appreciate its beauty from outside. The Saadian Tombs have remained being untouched for many years and believed to have some superstitious powers. There are beautiful decorations and you can always explore the tombs leisurely. The Majorelle Gardens is home to many plant species from all over the world and you will also find the Berber museum located in the garden. While it is quite expensive, it offers a great atmosphere to enjoy foods and drinks.
Other notable attractions in Marrakech city include the Ben Youssef Madrassa, El Bahia Palace, El Badi Palace and the beautiful Menara gardens. The historic, old city also has some share of its attractions as well and worthy a visit. Marrakech city is generally safe and enjoys heavy police presence. Nevertheless, you must always be alert at all times and know your surroundings well. Common safety precautions must be practiced just like you would do in any city. While you don’t have to worry about violent crime in Marrakech, your money is prone to theft especially when walking in the poorly lit and hidden streets. Also, international terrorism is a great threat in Morocco and Marrakech is not a heaven either considering it is one of the biggest cities in the country.
